Jacob went surfing. Yes, I mean really surfing. He is 6 years old with Autism and Apraxia and these amazing people from Surfers Healing got our son on a surf board, 3x. It was so heart warming to see him succeed. For me it opened my heart and mind to all that he can do. based in Banbury is running a scheme to use dogs to support children with autism.

The dogs provide practical help to the children which it is hoped will help build their confidence to cope with the outside world.

The pilot project has been set up by Dogs for the Disabled, along with the National Autistic Society.

It is claimed the scheme so far has seen "encouraging results" and hopes to expand in the future.

Helen McCain, Director of Training and Development at Dogs for the Disabled, said: "It allows the family and the child to go out and participate in normal family activities like shopping or going to the park.

"One of the benefits is the dog enables the child to be calmer and therefore engage in the environment that they are visiting."

To help a child cope, the dogs are trained to walk in front of the parent, with the child by its side.
<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3504432587981146922-142073597956766394?l=autismshowucare.blogspot.com' Care

Well we made it. It has been a wonderful long Holiday Season. Every day we learn more and more about our son with Autism and our daughter that is typical. Here are a few:

Rule 1. Retreat. We do not have to be Super Parents all the time and people please family and friends. We need to choose what we based on what our kids can handle not what other think they can handle.

Rule 2. Breathe. Stop and hold our kids as often as we can and just breathe.

Rule 3. Loose T-Shirt. Never take life to seriously and live life like a loose t-shirt.

Rule 4. Enjoy our kids company, So we didn't get to that last batch of cookies or that last present for "who is that again." Screw It. Just stop the madness and hang with your small peeps they will love it.

Kids Rock and we are lucky to be For example, go to the Grocery store, go to Wal-mart, stop for lunch go to the park, and go home. How unfair it was to our son is just unimaginable. So, this is what we have learned. To create success for our son and our family. Do we do it letter perfect? NO. Progress not perfection but we are always trying.

1) Use a picture schedule. Or even a white board or write on a napkin. Just keep them informed.

2)If the lights are too bright at the super market, leave.

3)If it is too noisy at Wal-mart, leave.

4) Don't use McDonald's or candy as a treat. It will only create behavior problems later.

5) Have backups of their comfort items. For Jacob he loves his red car. We try to always have extra red cars available. With the A(very little A on the bottom) yes we are talking about Lighting McQueen.

6) When he stims, let him. You can try to do redirect but the truth is, it feels comforting. So, the flapping and spinning is fine with us.

7) Don't get mean or mad. If your energy increases, guess what? So will theirs. So, take a breath and try to get calmer and calmer.

8) Defend your child. That's right defend your child. If someone is staring , doing nothing is a bad a staring. We walk over calmly and educate the eyeballs. Amazing what a quiet conversation can do.

9)Keep the routine the same. It is key for our son that each day runs very close the next. It is very comforting for him.

10) Go to party's or events early ,walking into a crowd is very overwhelming. Leave with the 5 minutes warning drill. A picture book is great for leaving.

11) Events with typical kids usually are dreadful. Especially if there is an odd number of total children. At some point they get left out, pushed aside and frankly kids can be very mean. So pick your village when your child is young. It will help build confidence and friends will follow.

10) Retreat, Retreat. When life just gets to be too much. Go home with your family. Shut the door, turn off your cell phone. Shut the outside world out and don't let it in. Let everyone regroup together and alone.

Because the world is not set up for my son with Autism it is our responsibilities to help create a successful day. I would never ask someone who hears music on volume 10 to go "with it," or sees lights as bright as a surgical room to just "deal with it." So, we respect him and work with him.

We also never stop working on his helping him to be comfortable and able to mainstream into society.

He sees a Neurodevelopement Pediatrician that specializes in children on the spectrum. He receives 12 supplements 2x a day, chelation every other weekend, HBOT, OT, Speech Therapy, PT and we have the therapy swing in our home.

Today(6 yrs old) he is mainstreamed into Kindergarten. He is our hero.

His success is our responsibility. When Jacob Chambliss was 30 months, he was diagnosed with severe Apraxia. When Jacob was 35 months old, he was diagnosed with Autism. His parents, Kelly and Caroline were told that he would never speak, and wondered if he would ever have a future full of memories – playing high school sports, going off to college, being married, having children.

Before they found out he also had Autism, Jacob’s parents wondered what they could do to help him. Combined with intense speech therapy, it was recommended that they use sign language to communicate with him. That is when they were introduced to Signing Time.

Signing Time is a DVD series that teaches American Sign Language (ASL) as a means to communicate with children of all abilities, including children who have special needs.

Coleman, co-creator of Signing Time, is also the mother of two daughters with special needs - one deaf and the other born with spina bifida and cerebral palsy. By learning to sign early in life, both little girls now successfully communicate in English and ASL.

Within three weeks, Jacob had 75 signs and within five weeks he knew 200 signs. Kelly Chambliss relates a story about Jacob. Not realizing how much ASL would ‘save his life,’ she recalls that one day Jacob signed “hurt” and pointed to his ear. She took him to the doctor where they said he had a slight ear infection. “I started to cry. The doctor looked at me with a surprised look that said, ‘Really, it’s not that bad.’ All I could say as I held my son was, ‘I know doctor, but he told me!’” said Chambliss.

Jacob is just one child of many who have benefited from Signing Time. On Monday, October 13th, Rachel Coleman will make a surprise visit to Jacob’s preschool; which he attended for three years. He is now attending Eaton Elementary School, where he is a mainstreamed kindergartener. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. Rachel will hold a special Signing Time story hour at the Child Development Center where children of all abilities will learn the value of using ASL to communicate.

Families and children will also have the opportunity to meet Rachel, ask questions and show off their signs during a separate meet and greet at the Northeast Branch Library from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. that same evening. Media are invited to attend either event to witness this inspiring story.

WHERE/WHEN: First Event with Children – Begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Child Development Center located at Princess Place Dr, Wilmington, NC 28405 (restricted to CDC students only)

Second Event: Meet and Greet – Begins at 3:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. at the Northeast Branch Library located at 1241 Military Cutoff Rd, Wilmington, NC 28405(open to the Public)

###

ABOUT SIGNING TIME & TWO LITTLE HANDS PRODUCTIONS
Signing Time is a captivating and entertaining DVD series produced by Two Little Hands Productions. Gee, how do I know that, well I'm a Mom of an Autistic Child. And believe or not I learned how to respond (rather than react to Jacob) from my Horse Instructor. Never get "mean or mad." So for today, my motto for new parents of a child with special needs, "Don't get mean or mad."

ottoblotto's blog: Cafepress vs Printfection vs Zazzle

ottoblotto's blog: Cafepress vs Printfection vs Zazzle

It begins...

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; A special thanks to Sue Coffey and the team at the Child Development Center.

He is a living miracle....

Autism Show U Care was created to educate and empower our community about an epidemic that has effected an entire generation of our children.
